Turmeric Ginger Syrup
Syrup sounds good and is good! It’s a magical way of making herbs taste delicious. Depending on the types of herbs used, syrups can be helpful for coughs, congestion, inflammation, immune support and so much more. Typically a syrup is made with sugar or honey and will keep the longest with these sweeteners. You can substitute other sweeteners like agave, you’ll just need to use them up more quickly.
Making syrup is quick and easy, too. You’re basically infusing the herb of choice in water, straining, then adding equal amounts of your sweetener and heating just until it dissolves. Syrups can be used alone or as an ingredient for something else, like gummies or tea. The taste of your syrup will depend on the type of herb you use and if it is fresh or dried.
Here is a recipe for a syrup using fresh herbs- Turmeric and Ginger. I chose ginger for it’s warming qualities and turmeric for it’s ability to reduce inflammation. I was excited to find a local turmeric that was beautiful and aromatic. You can typically find fresh turmeric in the produce section of your local co-op or health food store. The resulting syrup is spicy and warming. I think you’re going to love it.
